DREAM BEGINS - Starting your own accounting firm

Growth Club Series: The Dream That Started It All

This is the first feature in our four-part Accounting Firm Growth Club series, following the inspiring and relatable journey of starting, growing, and scaling an accounting firm. Part 1 focuses on taking the first leap and that pivotal moment for firm owners. Whether you’re thinking of starting your own practice, already navigating your first year in business, or preparing to scale to the next level, David's story offers insights, motivation, and a reminder of why we embarked on this journey in the first place.

Who's David and What's This All About?

Meet David. He’s not a real person, but his story represents thousands of accounting firm owners across the UK. Everything David goes through is inspired by real conversations we’ve had with ambitious firm owners.

This is Part 1 of our Growth Club series, and the beginning of David’s journey.

The Dream

For David, the journey didn’t start overnight but actually started with a simple but powerful thought: “I could do this myself.”

David envisioned choosing his clients, building meaningful relationships, controlling his time, becoming the go-to accountant for local businesses, and, helping them grow.

And like many who start their own firms (often in their late 30s after hitting a career plateau) David was also driven by something deeper. The desire to create a better life for his family and take control of his lifestyle.

Taking The First Step

After years of training, qualifying, and putting in the graft at a mid-sized practice, he began to notice the same pattern again and again:

  • Small businesses crying out for proper financial advice

  • Owners frustrated by accountants who “just do the books”

  • Firms stuck reacting, not proactively helping their clients grow

David started helping a few friends on the side (a tax return here, a bit of advice there) and realised something: there was a gap in the market. Local businesses didn’t just want compliance. They wanted a partner who could help them make better financial decisions.

That realisation was the turning point. David handed in his notice, bought a domain name, and took the bold step to set up David & Co Accounting from his spare room.

Getting Started

With his website live, logo sorted, and the first networking events under his belt, David was officially in business. He knew that building relationships would be the key to growth.

David threw himself into the work:

  • Attending networking events to meet potential clients

  • Reaching out to connections on LinkedIn to spark conversations

  • Focusing on clients and understanding their needs

This laid the foundation for the strong, lasting relationships that would fuel his firm’s growth.

The First Wins

Success came quickly. A couple of referrals turned into a steady trickle of clients. David’s reputation grew. His inbox filled up. The books balanced, the fees rose, and he even brought in a junior bookkeeper to take on the heavier work.

This early growth was a direct result of his ambition and willingness to take the leap. David’s dream was becoming a reality.

Industry Insight: Edward Gyde

The decision to start his own firm came from a mix of ambition, personal passion, and recognising a gap in the market. After years at EY, he saw firsthand the growing shortage of accountants and the pressure this placed on firms and clients alike. He wanted to build something better, a practice where relationships came first, advice went beyond the numbers, and client service matched his own high standards. Like many firm owners, Edward also reached a point where he wanted greater control over his future, the freedom to shape his business his way, and to create something that could support his aspirations.
